Calgary, the Next Disc Golf Mecca?

The David Richardson Memorial Disc Golf Park, a championship level course, is now officially open along the Rotary/ Mattamy Greenway with help from friends and family, the Parks Foundation and its supporting sponsors.

Have you tried disc golf? It’s a sport that’s proliferating through our social circles and steadily gaining traction. Disc golf resembles traditional golf where the over arching goal is to throw a disc in the fewest throws possible –only this time, you get to hear the sweet sound of the rustling chains in the basket to confirm your accuracy (and feed your inner ego).

The David Richardson Memorial Disc Golf Park spans 27 acres and features two artificial-turf tee pads and multiple baskets for each hole that welcomes a range of skill levels.

Traditionally, this course requires 3 discs: a putter, midrange, and driver that cost the same as a full course dinner. Roughly $45 will get you a beginner package at your neighbourhood store or if you’re a frugal hipster like some of us, you can get a feel of the game by using your own frisbee! If you’re short on time, you’ll be happy to know Disc Golf takes roughly 2 hours to play so you’ll have plenty of time to fit in other activities your day!

This sport welcomes all ages from tugging toddlers to your great grand parents. Aside from the David Glen Richardson Memorial Disc Golf Park, there are three other courses in Calgary:

  • Forest Lawn (9 baskets): located in Forest Lawn Park at 52nd St and 14th Ave S.E. in Calgary. You can park in the lot next to the tennis courts, accessed from 52nd Street just north of 14th Ave.
  • Baker Park (18 baskets): It is located across the Bow River from Bowness Park.  Cross the river going north on the 85 St. bridge, and turn onto Scenic Bow Road.  The parking lot entrance is on your left.
  • Thorncliff (9 baskets): Thorncliff Greenview Community Centre, (5800 Centre Street North), walk down the hill across the baseball diamond to the first paved path.   You will find tee # 1 to the right of the basket (#9) beside the path.  The tee offs are marked with disc sized white circles on the ground.

And the following private course:

  •  Lloyd Park (18 baskets, $20): located south of Calgary, on Highway 22X/Marquis of Lorne Trail. Turn right (west) off of Macleod Trail on Highway 22X for about 8.5 km Lloyd Park is on the south side of the highway-- the exit is immediately west of Red Deer Lake school. Look for the signs indicating where to turn left off of 22x.

If you’re looking for a short activity where you can maintain a conversation, this is certainly the sport to try!

See you on the green!

Your pals,
